#6 ESU FALLS TO #6 WEST TEXAS A & M IN TOPEKA

October 2, 2009-In a battle of teams tied for #6 in the AVCA National Poll, Emporia State dropped a five set thriller to West Texas A&M 25-22, 31-29, 15-25, 20-25, 13-15 at the Lady Blues Fall Classic in Topeka's Lee Arena. Arica Shepard led ESU with 21 kills and 17 digs while Brittney Miller added a career high 19 kills for the Hornets. Amy Byfield added 28 assists and Ting Liu had 55 assists.

ESU took the first set 25-22 after jumping out to a 5-1 lead to start the match. The Hornets would lead 19-10 before the Lady Buffs would close to 23-22. A Shepard kill and ace from Ting Liu sealed the first set for ESU.

The Hornets trailed 12-8 in the second set before an 8-4 run tied the score at 16-16. Neither team would gain more than a two point lead the rest of the set. ESU would fight off three set points and WT would hold off three before Brianne Boner had two kills to end the set at 31-29

ESU led the third set 6-1 on a Shepard kill. WT came back with an 11-3 run to take a 12-9 lead. The Hornets would tie the score at 12-12 but the Lady Buffs ended the set on a 13-3 run to win their first set of the match at 25-15.

ESU had a 4-1 lead in the fourth set before WT went on a 6-2 run to take the lead and the Lady Buffs would not trail again as they took the set 25-20.
The Hornets and Lady Buffs were tied at 5-5 in the fifth and final set when WT went on a 7-2 run. Shepard had four kills in a 6-2 Hornet run to pull within 14-13 before Melissa HArper completed the West Texas comeback with a kill to win the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.

ESU is back in action at 4:30 p.m. Friday when they take on Angelo State in Washburn's Lee Arena.

NOTES:
This was Shepard's second straight 20 kill match and the fourth time in the last six matches she has passed the 20 kill mark.
Shepard needs three kills to pass WU's Jill Gassen for tenth on the all-time MIAA list.
Byfield moved past Nikki Runnebaum for third in all-time digs at ESU.
This was a rematch of last season's NCAA South Central Regional Semifinal won by ESU 3-0 in White Auditorium.
