PHILIPS SETS SCHOOL RECORD IN FINAL MEET

May 23, 2009-Senior Connie Philips set a school record in the javelin in the final meet of her career at the NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track & Field Championships in San Angelo, Texas. Philips threw 148-00 to place fifth and was the high point scorer for ESU on Saturday.

“Connie really came through as a senior in her final meet,” said ESU head coach Dave Harris.

The 400m relay team placed fifth to pace the Hornet men, while ESU got a sixth place finish from Josh Honeycutt in the triple jump and seventh place finishes from Sam Williams in the 200m and Vincent Howze in the 400m hurdles.

“We didn’t achieve what we wanted to on the men’s side,” said Harris. “With a bunch of guys in their first national meet, I felt we came out super excited and we need to learn how to handle the excitement of a national meet.”

The relay team of Derwin Hall, Josh Schuler, Kenton Lonberger and Sam Williams ran 40.74 to place fifth. It was the fifth time this year they bettered the school record entering the season.

“The margin of error at a national meet is so small, you can just be off a little and it can cost you several places,” said Harris. “We were good, just not good enough for a national meet.”

Josh Honeycutt went 49-02.75 (14.99m) to place sixth for his first outdoor All-American honor.

“Josh is disappointed after winning the national championship indoors and coming in with the best jump in the nation this year,” said Harris. “But he did earn his first outdoor All-American honor after placing tenth last year.”

Vincent Howze ran 53.18 to place seventh in the 400m hurdles.

“Vincent is another freshman that just didn’t look comfortable in the finals,” said Harris. “His steps between hurdles were just off from his previous races.”

Sam Williams ran 21.11 and finished seventh in the 200m dash. He entered the national championships ranked 18 th in the nation.

“Sam came back after anchoring the 400m relay team to earn an individual All-American honor in his first national championship meet,” said Harris.

Skyler Delmott rounded out the competition for ESU, placing 12 th with a time of 9:39.75 in the 3000m steeplechase.

“Skyler entered the weekend ranked 15 th and was able to make the finals,” said Harris. ”He would have had to PR by over four seconds to earn All-American honors.”

As a team the ESU men placed 20 th and the women 36 th in the final standings. The Hornets set two school records in San Angelo. ESU will return with eight All-Americans from the weekend, the most Hornets to earn All-American honors outdoors since 2005, and seven of the eight are set to return next year.
