May 3, 2009-Six Hornets scored individual championships and Emporia State had nine other runner-up finishes at the MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. As a team ESU placed third on the men side and sixth with the women.

The ESU men picked up two wins in the jumps. Indoor national champion and outdoor national leader Josh Honeycutt defended his title in the triple jump. His jump of 50-04.75 was nearly a foot and a half in front of teammate Matt Koelling and another automatic qualifier for the national championships. Koelling’s 48-09.50 (14.87m) was a provisional qualifier. Honeycutt also placed second in the long jump with a provisional qualifier of 23-09.00 (7.24m).

Alex Pyle repeated his indoor championship in the high jump. He cleared 6-07.50 for the Hornets second straight win in the outdoor high jump. Dustin Andrews placed third in the high jump.

Vincent Howze, competing with a shoulder that had been partially dislocated during Thursday's practice, had the Hornet men’s only win on the track as captured the 400m hurdles. His time of 52.36 is the best time in the nation this year and ranks third all-time at ESU.

Kenton Lonberger finished second in the 100m and 400m relay and was third in the 200m for the Hornets.

Skyler Delmott provisionalled in the 3000m steeple chase in a time of 9:23.59 to place second and also placed fifth in the 10,000m

Jaclyn Sill won her unprecedented third straight 400m championship for the ESU women. Her time of 56.30 is a provisional qualifying mark. She also placed second in the 200m

Katie Mona gave ESU its fourth straight win in the 3000m in the final running of the event in the MIAA Championships. Her time of 10:03.04 is the third best in MIAA Championship competition and ranks fifth all-time at ESU. She also finished second in the 1500m

Two-time All-American Connie Philips won her first MIAA Championship in the javelin. Her throw of 142-05 (43.41m) is a provisional qualifier.

Brooke Kent had a provisional qualifying mark in the long jump. Her leap of 19-01.25 was good for third and ranks sixth all-time at ESU.

ESU had a combined total of eight provisional and one automatic qualifier over the weekend. The Hornets will have one more chance to qualify athletes for the national championships next weekend. ESU will host the ATG Sports Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday, May 9 at Welch Stadium/Witten Track.
