April 10, 2009-Freshman Tony Granillo placed second and junior Cole Davis was fourth Division II placer for Emporia State in the decathlon as the Hornets took an early lead in the Papa John’s D-II Challenge at Welch Stadium. Granillo, competing in his first decathlon, placed second to Central Missouri’s Shawn Boss by 98 points.

The Hornets lead Central Missouri by three points after one event heading into Saturday’s action at the Papa John’s D-II Challenge.

Anne Carlson won the women’s heptathlon competing unattached with 4,860 points. Northwest Missouri’s Emily Churchman finished second and was the top collegiate placer with a provisional qualifying mark of 4,719 points. Heather Miller of St. Cloud State was third with 4,588 points to provisionally qualify and move into eighth place in the national rankings. Jade Lippman of Wayne State (Neb.) was the final provisional qualifier, scoring 4,416 to rank 14th nationally.

Justine Davenport and Kaylea Goff placed 13th and 14th respectively for the Hornets in the heptathlon.

Northwest Missouri has 12 points while St. Cloud Sate and Wayne State each have 11 points in the team scoring.

Competition on Saturday will begin with the field events at 11 a.m. Finals on the track are scheduled to go from 12 noon until 4 p.m. on Witten Track at Welch Stadium.
