Decathlon Day One
April 9, 2009-Emporia State freshman Tony Granillo and junior Cole Davis are first and second in the men's decathlon following the first day of competition in the Papa John's D-II Challenge/ESU Open Multis at Welch Stadium/Witten Track.
Granillo, competing in his first collegiate decathlon, had the top performance in the long jump and was second in the 400m. Davis had the top mark in the high jump to move into second place.
Justine Davenport is the top ESU placed in the women's heptathlon after day one. The freshman from El Dorado is in 13th place after four events. Freshman Kaylea Goff from Manhattan, Kan. is 18th out of the 20 competitors still in the competition. Anne Carlson leads the competition, competing unattached. Northwest Missouri's Emily Churchman is the top collegiate performer in the heptathlon.
Day two will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the men's decathlon, while the women's heptathlon is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. at Welch Stadium/Witten Track.
