FIVE AUTOMATIC AND 39 PROVISIONAL MARKS SET AT D-II CHALLENGE

April 11, 2009-With beautiful weather as a backdrop, 39 provisional qualifying marks including five automatic marks were set at the Papa John’s D-II Challenge that wrapped up at Welch Stadium/Witten Track on Saturday. In addition three meet records and one Emporia State school record were set during the meet.

The Hornets earned one of the automatic qualifiers and six of the provisional marks, led again by Josh Honeycutt. The indoor national champion won the triple jump with an automatic mark of 50-10 and went 23-06 to provisional and place second in the long jump.

Vincent Howze was named Men’s Track Athlete of the Meet, scoring 18 points for the Hornets with a win in the 400m hurdles and runner-up finish in the 110m hurdles. His time of 53.31 in the 400m hurdles is a provisional qualifier.

The 400m relay team of Derwin Hall, Josh Schuler, Kenton Lonberger and Sam Williams ran 40-95 to set a new ESU record and provisionally qualify for the national meet. They are currently ranked sixth in the nation in Division II.

Dustin Andrews and Alex Pyle both cleared 6-08.75 to provisionally qualify in the high jump. Andrews won the competition with fewer misses.

Central Missouri’s Drew Frizzell was named the Men’s Field Athlete of the Meet with three wins in the weight events with an automatic and two provisional qualifiers.

Katie Mona was named the Women’s Track Athlete of the Meet with wins of over seven seconds in both the 1500m and 3000m.

Jaclyn Sill won the 400m and Christy Weller took the 800m to give ESU victories in all the track events over 400m.

Connie Philips provisionalled in the javelin for the third week in a row. She won the event with a season’s best 144-05 to rank eighth in the nation.

Anna Kay Campbell of Lincoln was the Women’s Field Athlete of the Meet. She won the long jump with a leap of 20-05.00 to set a meet record and automatically qualify for the national meet.

The Hornets will split their squad next weekend. Selected athletes will head to the West Coast to take part in the Mt. SAC Relays, Asuza Pacific Invite and the VS Long Beach State Invitational. Another group will take part in the Kansas Relays in Lawrence.
