Honeycutt wins individual championship
March 14, 2009-Josh Honeycutt captured Emporia State’s first men’s individual indoor national championship to lead the Hornets to a 14th place finish at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Houston, Texas. Sam Williams also earned All-American honors for ESU with an eighth place finish in the 60m dash.
Honeycutt, a sophomore from Iola, Kan., was ninth heading into the finals and was sitting in fifth going into the last round of jumps. He went a personal best 50-05.50 (15.38m) to rank second all-time at ESU indoors.
Honeycutt’s championship is ESU’s first in the triple jump and the first individual indoor championship for the men’s program since David Kipelio’s NAIA indoor championship in the two-mile run in 1990. He is the third Hornet man to win an NCAA national championship joining Jason Stuke (outdoor shot put in 1998) and Andy Vogelsberg (outdoor javelin in 2006) and the 11th Hornet overall since ESU joined the NCAA in 1992.
Williams earned All-American honors in his first national championship meet. He ran 6.84 in the 60m dash to place eighth.
ESU scored 11 points to place 14th as a team. It is the second straight year the ESU men have placed in the top 15 nationally.
