ESU DOWN TO TWO ATHLETES AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

March 13, 2009-After a rough Friday, the Emporia State track and field team will have two athletes competing on Saturday at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in Houston, Texas.

Sprinter Sam Williams qualified for the finals in the 60m and jumper Josh Honeycutt will be competing in his specialty, the triple jump on Saturday.

Williams gained the eighth and final spot in the 60m finals by .006 seconds, running a 6.84 in his heat of the prelims.

Honeycutt is ranked fourth in the triple jump. He placed ninth at 23-02.50 (7.07m)in the long jump to just miss earning All-American status. He was ranked 13 th entering the competition.

Katie Mona placed fourth in her heat and tenth overall with a time of 5:02.11 to miss the finals in the mile by one position.

Craig Saalfeld was the other Hornet in Houston. He was forced to withdraw from competition when he pulled a groin muscle while warming up for the high jump portion of the pentathlon. He was in seventh place after three events when he was forced to withdraw from the meet.

NOTES: The ESU women will break a string of scoring in 13 straight indoor national championship meets, which was the sixth longest active streak in the nation entering the championships.
