February 1, 2009-Emporia State’s Craig Saalfeld provisionally qualified for the NCAA National Championships in the pentathlon with the eighth best mark in the nation this season. His total of 4,838 points earned him fourth place at the K-State Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
He finished the both days strong, going 6-06.75 (2.00m) to place second in the high jump and set a personal best with a 36-11.50 (11.26m) mark in the shot put on Friday and placed third in the 100m to end the competition.
In other action Tony Granillo placed fifth in the open long jump with a mark of 20-01.75 (6.14m) on Friday.
