HORNET TRACKSTERS TUNE-UP FOR MIAA

February 21, 2009-The nationally ranked Emporia State track team sent sent athletes to two meets in two states over the weekend and came away with a pair of provisional qualifiers. ESU had seven top ten performances at the Nebraska Tune-up on Friday and had three individual championships at the KSU Open on Saturday.
“It was a long two days going up to Nebraska on Friday and up to K-State on Friday,” said ESU Head coach David Harris. “We used this weekend to tune up and get those last performances we need going into the MIAA. There were not a lot of top performances, but I am encouraged by several personal best we achieved this weekend. “
Katie Mona had the top performance for the Hornets, placing fifth in the women’s mile run at Nebraska.  Her time of 4:57.38 is the third bet time in ESU history and missed the automatic mark by less than a second. After the conversion for the banked track at the Devaney Center, her time is the eighth best in the nation this year.
“Katie continues to put up some very good marks as a freshman,” said Harris. “The mile is a very good mark and we felt since she had drifted down the NCAA list she had to take another shot at it.”
Alex Pyle took advantage of the off Saturday for the Hornet men’s basketball team to provisionally qualify for the national meet in the high jump at KSU.  His mark of 6-08.75 (2.05m) earned him a third place showing at KSU and is tied for 14th in the nation.  He has the third best mark in the MIAA behind teammate Craig Saalfeld and MSSU’s Chris Brown.  Saalfeld and Pyle’s basketball teammate Dustin Andrews both cleared 6-06.75 (2.00m) to place fifth and sixth.
“It was good to see Alex jumping a provisional mark,” said Harris. “I’m just glad to have them  (Pyle and Dustin Andrews) compete before MIAA.”
Derwin Hall ran the fifth fastest time in ESU history in the 60m at KSU.  His time of 6.95 makes him the third Hornet to go under 7.0 in the 60m this year.
The Hornets will now prepare for the MIAA Championships February 27 through March 1 in Warrensburg, Mo.
