HORNETS WIN 12 EVENTS AT UCM INVITATIONAL
January 23, 2009-Emporia State picked up 11 individual championships one relay title and seven provisional qualifiers at the UCM Invitational on Friday night in Warrensburg, Mo. The ESU men placed second and the women third in the team standings.
Kenton Lonberger was a double winner and double provisional qualifier for the Hornet men. He won the 60m in 6.81 and came back to run a 22.02 in winning the 200m. He has provisionalled in at least one event in every meet this season and is currently ranked fourth in the nation in the 60m and fifth in the 200m.
For the second straight meet, ESU had three provisional qualifiers in the men’s triple jump. Matt Koelling handed Josh Honeycutt his first loss of the season by going 49-00.75 (14.95m) to win the triple. Honeycutt went 48-09.50 (14.87m) to place second. Doug Marshall provisionalled at 47-03.75 (14.42m) and placed fourth for ESU in the event. Honeycutt is ranked third in the nation, Koelling is now fifth and Marshall is 14th in Division II.
Craig Saalfeld picked up a championship with a leap of 6-10.25 (2.09m) in the high jump. He is now ranked second in the nation in the high jump. Adam McGovern gave ESU it’s other individual champion, winning the mile run.
Katie Mona and Jackie Jacobs were double winners for the ESU women as the Hornets won six of eight races on the track. Mona won the mile and the 3000m while Jacobs picked up wins in the 200m and 400m.
Brooke Kent won the 60m and had a provisional qualifier of 18-07.25 (5.67m) to finish second in the long jump. That mark ranks eighth in the nation this season. Christy Weller picked up the other individual championship for ESU, winning the 800m.
The women’s 1600m relay also won defeating Central Missouri by nearly a full second.
ESU is scheduled to take next weekend off before heading to the hydraulic banked track of the Devaney Center at the University of Nebraska on February 6-7.
