ESU TRACK & FIELD HAS SEVEN PROVISIONALS, TWO AUTOMATICS OVER WEEKEND
February 7, 2009-The Emporia State track and field team had an outstanding weekend with seven provisional qualifiers, two automatic qualifiers and a school record at two meets on Friday and Saturday.
Hornet newcomer Sam Williams had an automatic qualifier and set a school record in his ESU debut at the Mule Relays in Warrensburg, Mo. The junior from Clernont-Ferrand, France ran 6.74 to win the 60m in automatic qualifying time. His school record time is the third fastest time in the nation this year. He came back to win the 200m. His time of 21.92 is a provisional qualifier and ranks second all-time at ESU.
Sophomore Josh Honeycutt had the other automatic qualifier, becoming just the second Hornet to go over 50 feet in the indoor triple jump. His mark of 50-1.25 at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. was good for fourth behind two Nebraska jumpers and one from UCLA.
The Hornet women were led by Katie Mona. The freshman won the mile and anchored the runner-up distance medley relay at the Sevigne Invitational. Her time of 4:58.75 is the third fastest in ESU history and ranks sixth in the nation this year. She teamed with Kathryn Davison, Jackie Jacobs and Christy Weller to run 12:11.60 in the DMR to rank seventh in Division II this year.
Matt Koelling was a double qualifier with provisional marks in the long and triple jump in Warrensburg. Doug Marshall also provisionalled in the triple jump at the Mule Relays. Kenton Lonberger provisionally qualified in the 60m again with a 6.84 in Lincoln.
With three weeks remaining until the MIAA Championships, ESU now has six women and six women provisionally qualified for the national championships in five events for the women and six events for the men.
The Hornets are scheduled to be back in action next weekend at the Pittsburg State Invitational on Saturday.
