ESU MEN IN SECOND AT MIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS HEADING TO SUNDAY

February 28, 2009-Individual championships by Alex Pyle and Craig Saalfeld have helped put the Emporia State men in second place heading into Sunday’s final day of competition at the MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Hornets trail host Central Missouri by three points and have a 37 point lead over third place Missouri Southern. The ESU women are in sixth place thanks to an MIAA record setting performance in the distance medley relay.

Pyle and Saalfeld both cleared a provisional qualifying heighth of 6-08.75 with Pyle winning the championship on fewer misses. Saalfeld had won the heptathlon earlier in the day with a provisional qualifying mark of 5,175 points to rank third in the nation. Pyle, also a forward on the Hornet basketball team, left Warrensburg immediately after the high jump to return to Emporia for ESU’s 81-74 win over Ft. Hays State.

The Hornets also got 14 points out of the triple jump. Josh Honeycutt had a provisional qualifier of 49-03.50 to finish second and Doug Marshall went 47-09.75 to provisionally qualify and place third.

The distance medley relay team of Adam McGovern, Kyle Kotzman, Sloane Kern, and Will Hohmeier placed second and Skyler Delmott finished third in the 5000m to round out ESU’s scoring.

The women’s distance medley team of Kathryn Davison, Tiffany Baum, Christy Weller, Katie Mona ran 12:20.94 to set an MIAA record in the event and provisionally qualify for nationals. Deja Jackson threw 50-10.75 to place fifth for ESU’s other two points on Saturday.

In the preliminary competition, Samuel Williams had the top time in the 60m and was second in the 200m. Kenton Lonberger had the third fastest qualifying time in the 60m, but pulled a hamstring in the 200m prelims and will not be able to run at full strength in the finals of the 60m. The ESU men qualified for a total of seven spots in Sunday’s finals.

The ESU women qualified five spots for Sunday’s finals led by Katie Mona’s second place performance in the 800m prelims.

Action will begin at 12 noon on Sunday with the remaining field events. The finals in the running events are scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
