ESU RELAY TEAM SETS SCHOOL RECORD

February 14, 2009-The women’s distance medley relay team bettered their own school record to highlight action for Emporia State at the ISU Track & Field Classic in Ames, Iowa over the weekend.

The foursome of Kathryn Davison, Katie Mona, Christy Weller and Jackie Jacobs ran a 12:04.00 to move into eighth on this year’s NCAA Division II performance list. They bettered their own record of 12:11.60 set at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational last weekend.

“The women came close to breaking the 12 minute barrier which we feel would have gotten them in the national meet,” said ESU head coach Dave Harris.

Jackie Jacobs just missed a provisional mark in the 200m at 25.57 and was the second fastest D-II athlete in the field of 130. Her time ranks second in the MIAA this season.

For the Hornet men, Vincent Howze ran the second fastest 400m in ESU history on the banked track of the Lied Center. His 48.98 trails only Brent Smitheren’s 48.87 set in 2000 on the ESU list and is the fastest time in the MIAA this season. He placed fourth overall and was the top Division II placer out of 56 competitors. Moe Gilstrap ran a 50.92 to place 35 th in the 400m as well.

Skyler Delmott ran his second fastest indoor 5000m at 15:02.44 to place fifth overall and was the top Division II finisher. His time ranks third in the MIAA this season.

Sam Williams placed 44 th in the long jump of 21-04.00 (6.50m) before injuring his shoulder and withdrawing from the rest of the competition.

“Sam hit his shoulder in landing on the third jump so I had to take him out of the running events,” said Harris. “It was very dissappointing to him as Iowa State’s track could have brought out some great times for him in the 200 and the team in the 4 x 400 relay that we had to scratch as well.”

The next scheduled action for Emporia State will be next weekend at the Nebraska Tune-up on Friday and the KSU Open on Saturday.
