January 15, 2010-Emporia State had seven provisional qualifiers, three automatics, six top-five all-time at ESU marks and eight event champions at the WSU Varsity Apartments Invitational at Wichita State on Friday night. The Hornet men placed second behind the host Shockers while the ESU women tied for fourth with Oklahoma State.
“On the mens side this was one of the most exciting scored meets we have been involved in during my years at Emporia State,” said ESU head coach David Harris. “Wichita State has a lot of depth and we stayed with them with some outstanding first places and NCAA Qualifying marks. In the end WSU's depth won out. But I told the men’s team how often does Emporia State beat Oral Roberts, Tulsa, and Oklahoma State in athletic competition in any sport and they beat all three on the same day. We have been through a lot this fall but this is a great group of guys and I really enjoy watching our staff coach them."
National champion and current national leader Josh Honeycutt had his second automatic outing of the season in the triple jump. He won the event with a mark of 50-06.00 (15.39m)to outdistance teammate Matt Koelling in second place. Koelling’s jump of 49-01.00 (14.89m) is also a provisional qualifying mark and ranks third in the country this season and third all-time at ESU.
Freshman Briar Ploude had the other automatic qualifier for the men. He cleared 6-11 (2.11m)to win the high jump. That is the second best high jump in the nation this season and tied for third all-time at ESU. All-American Alex Pyle made his first appearance of the season and had a provisional qualifying mark of 6-08.25 (2.04m) to place third. He is currently tied for ninth in the nation.
All-American Derwin Hall turned in the second best time in ESU history to win the 60m dash. His mark of 6.77 is a provisional qualifier and currently tied for the top time in the nation in Division II. Josh Schuler finished second with a time of 6.91 that ranks fifth all-time at ESU. Schuler also won the 200m.
Zach Rosenberger continued his strong season for the Hornets, moving to second all-time at ESU by clearing 16-01.25 (4.91m) in the pole vault. He is only the second person to clear 16 feet in the vault for ESU and ranks second in the nation at the present time.
Kevin Roulhac picked up the other collegiate championship for ESU in the weight throw. His toss of 58-06.50 (17.84m) is third all-time at ESU and ranked 12 th in the nation this year.
Brooke Kent led the ESU women with an automatic qualifying mark in the triple jump. She won the event with a leap of 39-08.75 (12.11m), the second best mark in the nation and all-time at ESU.
Jennifer Robinson cleared 5-06.00 (1.68m) to win the high jump with a provisional qualifier. She is currently tied for fifth in NCAA Division II in the event.
Renae Weaver provisonalled in the long jump. Her leap of 18-05.75 (5.63m) is tied for fifth in the nation.
Deja Jackson had the other event champion for ESU. She won the weight throw with a mark of 51-07.00 (15.72m), her second time over 50 feet in the event this year.
“The amount of NCAA Qualifying performances for both the men and women was amazing considering we have only been back training for a little over a week,” said Harris. “And we did this despite sitting out Katie Mona, Adam McGovern and Will Hohmeier.”
The Hornets are back in action on Jan. 23 when they travel to Warrensburg, Mo. to take part in the UCM Invitational.
