August 28, 2008-Emporia State head track and field/cross country coach David Harris has announced the addition of 27 student-athletes that will attend ESU and compete for the Hornets.

"We have really been trying to increase our depth and this class will go a long ways to helping that,” said Harris. “Because we were most interested in building squad size we touched on all areas - jumps, sprints, hurdles, throws and distance.”

The class includes three student-athletes that won championships at the 2008 KSHSAA State Meet - Dillon Cowling in the Class 4A boys 800m, Ashley Wakefield-Hall in the Class 4A girls 400m relay, and Jacquelyn Jacobs in the Class 5A girls 1600m relay. A total of 14 of the 21 Kansas high school recruits scored at the 2008 state meet.

“We still have our work ahead in continuing to build depth needed to go after team MIAA Championships,” said Harris. “That will be an emphasis in 2009 class also. We do think we have the stars on our team to lead us there.”

Several of the distance runners will begin competing for ESU next weekend as the Hornet cross country teams start the season at the Maple Leaf Invitational in Baldwin City, Kan. The track season will begin with the KSU All-Comers meet in early December.

The Hornet women placed tenth at the 2007 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships while the men placed 18th outdoors. The men finished 11th at the NCAA Indoor Championships while the women pulled in a 23rd place finish indoors.
