ESU'S SAALFELD LEADS DECATHLON AFTER DAY ONE

April 10, 2008-Emporia State’s Craig Saalfeld used wins in the high jump and 400m to take the lead in the decathlon after day one of the ESU Open Multi-events. ESU’s Ryan Green was 12 th in the heptathlon after the first day of events.
Saalfeld high jumped 6-08.75 (2.05m) to jump from eighth to first after four events. His time of 49.52 following a lightning delay was the best time in the 400m as well. He also went 21-11.50 (6.69m) to place second in the long jump. He started the day with a seventh place finish with a time of 11.39 in the 100m. His worst finish was 14 th with a mark of 32-09.75 (10.00m) in the shot put.
Green placed in the top ten in three of the four day one events. She was fifth in the 200m with a time of 26.46 following a 45 minute lightning delay. She placed sixth with a mark of 32-05.75 (9.90m) in the shot put right before the delay. She started the day with a ninth place finish with a time of 16.15 in the 100m hurdles. She was kept out of the top ten in the overall standings with 20 th place finish in the high jump after clearing 4-05.00 (1.35m).
After day one Saalfled has a 48 point lead over Darius Walker, who is competing unattached in the decathlon. Baker’s Ashlee Miller is leading the heptathlon by 131 points over Nebraska-Kearney’s Kelli Dring.
Action resumes on Friday at 10:30 a.m. with the men’s decathlon 110m hurdles. The heptathlon will get underway with the long jump at 11:30 a.m. The Multi-events are the first events of the Papa John’s Pizza D-II Challenge. The rest of the D-II Challenge will be contested on Sunday, April 13 beginning at 12 noon.
