April 13, 2008-The Emporia State men and women combined to win ten event championships as each team placed second in the Papa John’s Pizza D-II Challenge on Sunday at Witten Track and Welch Stadium. The Hornets also recorded ten provisional and one automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships in May. There were a total of 44 marks that hit at least the provisional qualifying mark with five of them being automatic.
All-American Jonel Rossbach was named the women’s Track Athlete of the Meet with two wins and two provisional qualifiers. She dominated the field in the 3000m, winning in a time of 9:59.37 to become just the fourth ESU women to break ten minutes in the event. She won by nearly a minute over Pittsburg State’s Brittany Graff and her time currently ranks fifth in the nation. Rossbach won the 1500m with a time of 4:40.58 earlier in the meet.
Brooke Kent also won two events for the ESU women. She ran a personal best and provisional qualifying 11.99 to become just the fifth ESU women to break 12 seconds in the 100m. She also won the long jump with a wind aided leap of 18-10.50 (5.75m) but also had two non-wind aided jumps that were provisional qualifiers.
Jaclyn Sill had a hand in two event championships, winning the 400m and anchoring the 1600m relay. Connie Philips was the other individual event winner for the ESU women, throwing the javelin 138-06 (42.21m) for a provisional qualifier.
Jennifer Robinson hit a provisional qualifier in the long jump at 18-05.00 (8.61m) to finish third and cleared 5-03.00 (1.60m) to place fourth in the high jump.
Molly Pannbacker had a pair of third place finishes in the shot and discus for ESU.
Emporia State Josh Honeycutt was named the men’s Field Athlete of the Meet after breaking a 42 year old school record with an automatic qualifying mark in the triple jump. He jumped 50-07.50 (15.43m) on his final attempt to win the triple jump and break Richard Boehringer’s mark of 50-02.00 set in 1966 at the Arkansas Relays. Honeycutt also jumped 22-05.00 (6.83m) to place fifth in the long jump.
Dustin Andrews cleared 6-08.75 (2.05m) to win the high jump with a provisional qualifying mark.
Eric Wellman picked up ESU’s final event championship with a time of 15:31.59 in the 5000m.
Kenton Lonberger provisionalled in both the 100m and 200m with second place finishes in each event. He ran 11.54 in the 100m and 21.43 in the 200m.
Damon Birk placed in three events and had a provisional qualifier in the shot put. He went 53-07.75 (16.35m) to place second in the shot. He was fifth in the hammer and sixth in the discus.
Doug Marshall finished third in both the long and triple jumps for ESU. Skyler Delmott and Alex Pyle placed second in the 10,000m and high jump respectively as did the 400m relay team.
Truman’s Ashley Bernard was named the women’s Field Athlete of the Meet after scoring a meet high 28 points. She won the hammer and shot and finished second in the discus with a provisional qualifying mark. Sean Bergstedt of Truman was named the men’s Track Athlete of the Meet. The nation’s leader in the 400m hurdles won his specialty with a time of 51.67 that was just .02 away from an automatic mark.
The next action for the Hornets will be the Kansas Relays next weekend in Lawrence, Kan.
