April 18, 2008-Emporia State's Jonel Rossbach set another school record last night at the Mt. SAC Relays. The senior from Omaha, Neb. ran 35:24.81 to place fourth in the women's collegiate 10,000m in Walnut, Calif. It was the first time she has run a 10,000m race in track and field. She shattered Trudy Searcy's 1987 record of 36:24.85 set as she finished fourth at the NAIA National Championships.
"I certainly have a lot of respect for the 10K distance now - it is not an easy race," said Rossbach.
The time is an NCAA Division II automatic qualifier and ranks as the top time in the nation this year.
"Jonel accomplished many goals she set for herself in this race - new school record, automatic NCAA Qualifying mark, solid competitive race in her first 10K," said head coach Dave Harris.
Rossbach is now ranked in the top five all-time at ESU in the 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m and 10,000m outdoors.
"We will consider after this weekend whether this race will be in her national plans," said Harris. "No decision has to be made until later in May but coming out here and running in a great race on the National Meet facility will allow us to now think about a possible 10K-5K double at nationals.
