BOTH HORNET SQUADS PLACE THIRD AT MIAA TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS
May 4, 2008-The Emporia State men’s and women’s teams both placed third at the MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend in Maryville, Mo. The Hornets came away with a total of 12 event champions and 21 provisional qualifiers for the national championships.
Jonel Rossbach won all four races from the 800m through the 5000m to earn high point honors for the meet. It is the second straight year she has been the high point scorer at the outdoor championships. She had a provisional qualifier in each race. She set a stadium record in the 800m with a time of 2:12.96 that ranks third all-time at ESU.
Brooke Kent was second in meet scoring with wins in the 100m and 200m, a second place finish in the heptathlon earlier in the week and third place finishes in the long jump and as a member of the 400m relay team.
Jennifer Robinson was another double event winner for the Hornets, winning the long jump and tying the ESU record in the high jump. Her mark of 5-08.50 (1.74m) ties Trish Bahr’s record set at the NAIA National Championships in 1988.
Jaclyn Sill had the other championship for the ESU women, winning the 400m for the second straight year in a provisional qualifying time.
The Hornet men were led by freshman Josh Honeycutt’s 15 points as he earned Freshman of the Year honors. He went 50-02.00 (15.29m) to win the triple jump and placing third in the long jump.
ESU swept the top three places in the high jump with all three Hornets clearing a provisional qualifying mark of 6-09.50 (2.07m). Craig Saalfeld won the event, Alex Pyle placed second and Dustin Andrews third based on misses.
Skyler Delmott won his first MIAA Championship with a provisional qualifying time of 9:25.01 in the 3000m steeplechase. His time is the fifth best in ESU history.
The Hornets will have one last chance to record provisional qualifying marks this Saturday at the ATG Sports Twilight Qualifier at ESU’s Witten Track in Welch Stadium.
