May 3, 2008-Emporia State had three event champions and five provisional qualifiers after the first day of competition at the MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Maryville, Mo. The Hornet women are in third place after seven events and the ESU men are sitting in fourth after five events. ESU has placed 12 athletes into Sunday’s finals, six men and six women.
Jonel Rossbach began her quest for four MIAA titles with a win and provisional qualifier in the 3000m. She also had the third fastest qualifying time in the 800m.
Jennifer Robinson won the other MIAA championship for ESU on Saturday with a provisional qualifying mark of 18-09.25 in the long jump.
After finishing second in the heptathlon on Monday, Brooke Kent placed third in the long jump with a provisional qualifier on Saturday. She ran the second fastest time in the prelims of both the 100m and 200m.
Jaclyn Sill has qualified for the finals in both the 200m and 400m and Ashley Spencer will be running in the 400m hurdle finals.
ESU picked up 18 points in the men's triple jump led by Josh Honeycutt’s championship with a provisional qualifier. Matt Koelling placed fourth with a provisional qualifier and Douglas Marshall finished sixth.
Damon Birk gave ESU five points with a fifth place finish in the discus and an eighth place finish in the hammer. Kevin Roulhac was seventh in the hammer for ESU and Brock Ternes placed fifth in the 10,000m.
Kenton Lonberger advanced to the finals in both the 100m and 200m with the third fastest qualifying time in each event. He will be joined in the 100m finals by Travis Lee and in the 200m finals by Josh Schuler, who each placed sixth in the prelims.
Craig Saalfeld advanced to the 400m finals with a sixth place finish and Eric Wellman placed eighth to qualify for the finals in the 800m.
The meet will wrap up on Sunday with finals in 15 women’s events and 16 men’s events.
