May 24, 2008—Senior Jonel Rossbach capped her outstanding career with a national championship in the 5000m to propel the Emporia State women to a tenth place finish at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Rossbach’s championship was one of seven All-American efforts for ESU during the three day meet in Walnut, Calif. The Hornet men placed 18th thanks to All-American performances by Craig Saalfeld and Kenton Lonberger.
Rossbach broke her own school record in the 5000m, running a 16:52.28 to overtake South Dakota’s Ramsey Kavan on the final lap. She ran in third most of the last five laps before running a 1:08.64 on the final lap to win the championship. It was the seventh time she has earned All-American honors and she became the first Hornet to win a national championship on the track since Kadri Kelve won the steeplechase in 2003.
Jennifer Robinson and Connie Philips both earned All-American honors for the ESU women on Saturday as well. Robinson placed seventh, clearing 5-08.00 (1.73m) in the high jump. Philips threw the javelin 138-02 (42.11m) to place eighth and earn her second All-American award of her career.
Kenton Lonberger provided the points for the ESU men on Saturday with a fourth place finish in the 200m. His time of 20.95 is the second best in ESU history behind Rex Ressler’s 20.92 set at the CIC championships in 1958. Josh Honeycutt placed tenth and Matt Koelling was 12th in the triple jump to round out ESU’s efforts on Saturday.
The ESU women were the top placing MIAA team at the national meet and it is the first time since 2001 that both programs finished in the top 20 nationally at the outdoor championships.
The national track championships wrapped up an outstanding athletic year for ESU in which nine teams finished their seasons in the top 25 nationally (volleyball, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, women’s tennis, softball and baseball).
