ESU PICKS UP SECOND RUNNER-UP
May 23, 2008-Craig Saalfeld put the Emporia State men on the scoreboard with a second place finish in the high jump to highlight the second day of action at the NCAA Division II National Track and Field Championships in Walnut, Calif.
Saalfeld cleared 6-10.75 (2.10m) and was awarded second place on misses to earn his first outdoor All-American honor. Alex Pyle and Dustin Andrews both cleared 6-06.75 (2.00m) to finish 12th and 14th respectively.
In preliminary action, Kenton Lonberger recorded the second fastest time in the men's 200m to qualify for Saturday's finals. His time of 21.25 won the final heat of prelims and will put him in the middle of the track for the final on Saturday. Jonel Rossbach came back after her second place finish in the 10,000m to qualify for the finals of the 5,000m. Her time of 17:24.54 was the third best in her heat to automatically advance to Saturday. Brooke Kent placed 21st in the 200m and did not advance to the finals.
In the team standings, the ESU women are in eighth place after seven events while the Hornet men are in 11th place after six events. ESU will have competitors in five events on Saturday. In addition to Lonberger and Rossbach on the track, Josh Honeycutt and Matt Koelling will be in the men's triple jump, Jennifer Robinson will be in the women's high jump and Connie Philips will throw the women's javelin.
