May 23, 2008-The Emporia State women are in first place after a rain delayed first day at the NCAA Division II Track and Field National Championships. Jonel Rossbach placed second in the 10,000m and Brooke Kent placed sixth in the long jump to give ESU 11 points after the first two events.
Rossbach finished second to Winrose Karunde of Abilene Christian in the 10,000m after entering the event seeded third. The two ran together most of the race with Karunde pulling away on the final lap.
Kent entered the long jump competition ranked 20th and was the last person to make the nine person final field. She came through on her next to last attempt with a jump of 18-04.25 (5.59m) to move into sixth place. Kent also finished 17th in the 100m prelims.
Kenton Lonberger was the other Hornet in action on Thursday and he finished 12th in the men's 100m.
Action continues today with ESU competing in the men's high jump, men's and women's 200m prelims and the women's 5000m prelims.
