March 14, 2008-On the strength of three All-American placers in the high jump, the Emporia State men find themselves in fourth place after the first day of action at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Mankato, Minn. The women are in 17th place after four events.
Sophomores Alex Pyle and Dustin Andrews were two of three athletes to clear 6-10.25 (2.09m), however they were placed third and fourth based on number of misses. Pyle and Andrews were both members of the MIAA Tournament runners-up men’s basketball team. Junior Craig Saalfeld rounded out the scoring for ESU with an eighth place finish. It is the first time in school history ESU has three All-Americans in a single event at the indoor championships.
Freshman Kenton Lonberger has the second fastest time in the 200m going into the finals on Saturday. His time of 21.80 broke his own school record set at the MIAA Championships two weeks ago. He failed to advance in the 60m, running a 6.87 to place 13th overall.
Sophomore Brooke Kent gave the ESU women a 17 th place showing after day one with a sixth place finish in the long jump. Kent also competed in the 60m prelims. She placed 14 th and did not advance to the finals.
“It was a good day and we are right on target,” said ESU head coach Dave Harris. “We have already picked up four All-American awards with three sophomores and a junior. It is a great experience to have some success at the national meet for all of our young athletes.”
The Hornets will have four athletes competing on Saturday. Freshman Josh Honeycutt is ranked eighth in the triple jump, sophomore Jennifer Robinson is ranked sixth in the high jump, Lonberger is ranked second in the 200m and senior Jonel Rossbach has the best time in the 5000m heading into the finals.
