HORNETS GET FOUR PROVISIONALS OVER WEEKEND
February 2, 2008-Josh Honeycutt provisionally qualified for the national championships with a mark of 47-01.50 (14.36m) in the triple jump on Saturday at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational.
“The Sevigne Invitational was a great meet for some of our future leaders of ESU track and Field to experience,” said ESU head coach Dave Harris. “With Jaclyn Sill being the only senior brought to the Husker the other four got a taste of some top flight Track and Field. I believe this is invaluable for the future.”
On Friday ESU athletes combined to pick up three championships and three provisional qualifiers at the Pitt State Invitational in Pittsburg, Kan. and the Frank Sevigne Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.
In Pittsburg, Alex Pyle won the men’s high jump with a provisional qualifying mark of 6-10.75 (2.10m) that ranks second in the nation. His mark is just one centimeter in front of teammate Craig Saalfeld’s mark of 6-10.50 (2.09m) set last weekend.
Damon Birk had a provisional qualifying mark of 52-10.75 (16.12m) to finish second behind 2003 NCAA Division II national shot put champion Tony Thompson.
Jennifer Robinson won the long jump and finished second in the high jump and triple jump to lead the ESU women.
Kathryn Davison picked up the other event championship for ESU by winning the 600 yard run.
Saturday Kenton Lonberger placed seventh in the consolation 60m after he clocked his second straight provisional qualifier at 6.88 in the 60m dash at the Sevigne Invitational on Friday. He also placed fifth in the consolation 200m and was one of only two Division II athletes to compete in those events on Saturday.
The Hornets will be back in action next weekend at the Mule Relays in Warrensburg, Mo.
