BOTH ESU TRACK TEAMS FINISH IN TOP THREE OF MIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

March 1, 2008-The Emporia State men’s and women’s track & field teams both finished in the top three of the MIAA Championships for the third time in the last four years on Saturday in Joplin, Mo. The ESU women had nine event championships on their way to a second place finish. The Hornet men had four event championships as they placed third in the team standings.

"We have won our share of championships over the years but I believe this group of athletes gave the best effort," said ESU head coach Dave Harris. "We have a board in our weight room where their names go up as MIAA Champions and I challenged our team in a meeting last Wednesday to see how many new names we could put up there. At one point in the meet, I remembered the old song “It’s Raining Men” and thought that it seems like it’s raining ESU champions. "

The ESU women got 30 points each from senior Jonel Rossbach and sophomore Brooke Kent as they shared high point honors for the meet. Rosssbach became a nine-time MIAA Champion with her three wins in the distance events. She provisionally qualified for the national meet in the mile and 5000m and set an MIAA record in the 3000m run.

"Brooke Kent gained so much confidence from her prelims on Friday that we all just waited to see what she would bring to Saturdays competition. It was impressive. As a sophomore she has put herself in elite status in this programs history," said Harris. "We have come to expect this kind of effort from Jonel - we almost take for it granted. She really wants to do this for the team - with little regards for records that she could set if she only ran one or two events."

Kent won the 60m, 200m and long jump for ESU with provisional qualifiers in the 60m and long jump. Her 7.70 in the 60m is the second fastest in ESU history.

Jaclyn Sill defended her championship in the 600 yard run with the third fastest time in ESU history. Sill was also apart of the MIAA champion 1600m relay team with Brandi Lundgren, Chastity Hughes-Stanton, and Ashley Spencer.

"Jaclyn missed the MIAA record by .06 seconds in winning her third straight title," said Harris. "We gave her the baton in the relay close to first and she did the rest to bring the last title of day - the 4 x 400."

Jennifer Robinson picked up the other individual event championship with a provisional qualifier in the high jump. Her mark of 5-07.25 (1.71m) is the third best in ESU history. Robinson also finished second in the long jump.

Kathryn Davison placed fourth in the 800m to round out the scoring for ESU after entering the competition seeded eighth.

Freshmen led the ESU men with 40 of their 83 points coming from first-year athletes for the Hornets. Kenton Lonberger earned high point honors and freshman of the year honors as he scored 20 points while winning the 60m and 200m with school records in both events. He ran a automatic qualifier of 21.83 in the prelims of the 200m and won with a time of 21.90 in the finals. He had a provisional qualifying time of 6.81 in the 60m.

Josh Honeycutt scored 16 points for ESU with a championship in the triple jump and third place finish in the long jump. His 48-10.75 in the triple is the second best all-time at ESU and a provisional qualifier.

"Kenton has just had a great freshman year - from January on he has stepped up to national class status and topped it off at the MIAA championships," said Harris. "Another freshman, Josh Honeycutt, provided big points in the jumps. In any other year Josh would have been freshmen of the year except for Kenton's achievements."

The rest of the freshman scoring came from Alex Pyle’s fourth place finish in the high jump as ESU scored 22 points in the event. Junior Craig Saalfeld won the event with an automatic qualifying mark of 6-11.50 (2.12m) for the second best jump in ESU history. Dustin Andrews finished second at a provisional qualifying height of 6-10.75 (2.10m) before he and Pyle drove back to Emporia to suit up for the Hornets basketball game against Southwest Baptist.

Seniors Damon Birk and Eric Wellman accounted for 11 of ESU’s points. Birk got a fourth place finish in the shot and fifth place finish in the weight throw with provisional qualifiers in both events. Wellman, who has battled injuries the past two years placed fourth in the mile and sixth in the 3000m run.

"Eric Wellman is slowly getting back. He has gone through so many disappointments since 2006 that at times he has almost wanted to give up," said Harris. "As his coach I know first hand how hard this has been for him. It is good to see his confidence building. He did his effort out of the slow heats - typically uncalled for to place out of those heats."

Skyler Delmott provided the rest of the points for ESU with a pair of fourth place finishes in the 3000m and 5000m.

The Hornets had a total of 14 provisional qualifying marks and two automatics over the weekend. The list of athletes that have earned a spot in the NCAA Indoor Championships will be released early this week. The national championships wil be held at Myers Field House on the campus of Minnesota State University on March 14-15 in Mankato, Minn.
