ESU Track and Field

ESU HAS TWO CHAMPIONS ON FIRST DAY OF MIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

February 29, 2008-Emporia State had two individual champions on the first day of the MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Joplin, Mo. In addition ESU had the top mark in the prelims in four preliminary events. After four events for the men the Hornets are in fourth place and after five events for the women ESU sits in fifth place.

Jonel Rossbach began her quest for three individual championships with a five second win over MSSU’s Kimi Shank in the 5000m. She gave the ESU women their only points on the day but three Hornets will go into Saturday’s finals with the top times on the track from Friday’s prelims.

Brooke Kent will go into Saturday with the top mark in both the 60m and 200m. Her time of 7.73 in the 60m is the second fastest in ESU history. She was ranked second in the 60m heading into the championships, but was not among the top six in the 200m entering the meet.

Jaclyn Sill, the pre-race favorite and defending champion in the 600 yard, had the top prelim mark in that event on Friday.

Kathryn Davison placed third in the 800m prelims after coming into the championships as the eighth seed.

Josh Honeycutt went for the second longest mark in school history on his final attempt to win the triple jump. His leap of 48-10.75 (14.90m) was seven inches better than pre-meet favorite Kiara Jones of Pittsburg State. Matt Koelling and Doug Marshall placed fifth and sixth to give the Hornets 13 points in the event.

Skyler Delmott placed fourth in the 5000m at 15:13.86 after entering the meet as the only MIAA runner under 15 minutes in the event this season.

Damon Birk had a provisional qualifier and personal best of 56-07.50 (17.26m) in the weight throw to place fifth.

Kenton Lonberger ran a provisional qualifier and school record 21.83 to have the top time in the 200m going into Saturday. He also had the third best qualifying time in the 60m on Friday.

ESU had a total of six provisional qualifiers for the NCAA Championships - Kent in the women’s 60m, Rossbach in the women’s 5000m, Lonberger in the men’s 60m and 200m, Honeycutt in the triple jump and Birk in the weight throw.

The MIAA Championships will continue on Saturday at the Leggett & Platt Center on the MSSU campus.
