December 8, 2007-Emporia State track & field athletes won four event championships and had a provisional qualifier at the KSU Allcomers and ISU Cyclone Holiday Preview meets on Saturday.
Damon Birk (Sr./Gridley, Kan.) won the shot put by nearly eight inches over 2003 World Outdoor Decathlon Champion Tom Pappas at the KSU Allcomers Meet. His mark of 53-10.50 is an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark. The other win in Manhattan came from Josh Honeycutt (Fr./Iola, Kan.) in the long jump. He jumped 22-07.75 in his first collegiate meet.
"Damon's shot put was the highlight of the weekend and was a PR," said ESU head coach Dave Harris. "The mark topped the performance that took Trent Olivier to nationals last year at Boston so we feel real good about his chances. It is a long season and Damon is capable of much longer throws."
Jaclyn Sill (Sr./Wichita, Kan.) and Skyler Delmott (So./Emporia, Kan.) both picked up wins at the ISU Cyclone Holiday Preview in Ames, Iowa. Sill ran a 58.12 in the women’s 400m run while Delmott won the men’s 3000m in 8:52.58.
"We wanted to do something special for Skyler for running # 1 all season long in cross country, so we sent him to big track at ISU and Jaclyn is our top national qualifier after All American Jonel Rossbach so she deserved a chance to run on a great facility," said Harris. "They were nice wins for both."
"We are basically a young team with only a few seniors. My only concern now is that they will maintain their shape in the next four weeks while they are away from their coaches and teammates. But it is not a new concern - has been the same for 16 years at ESU," said Harris. "We will send training programs home and hope they do them. Motivation, weather, facilities all play a part in how they return in second week of January."
ESU will not be back in competition until January 18-19 at the KSU Wildcat Invitational.
