January 26, 2008-The Emporia State track and field team came away with four provisional qualifying marks and three school records at the ISU Open in Ames, Iowa over the weekend.
“This is always an exciting meet for our athletes to compete in,” said ESU head coach Dave Harris. “It opens their eyes just walking into a facility and seeing a 300m indoor track - and with the competition it pushes many athletes to personal bests.”
All-American Jonel Rossbach made her 2008 indoor track debut in convincing fashion with a win and a school record. She won the 5000m on Friday night with the second best time in school history. Her time of 17:26.34 ranks second in the nation this year. She came back with a third place finish in the 3000m with a school record time of 9:50.39 in the non-championship event. She broke Susan Stine’s 1987 mark of 9:59.36 set in Oklahoma City, a mark that was the oldest indoor record for the ESU women.
“Jonel now owns the mile and 3000 m records at ESU and with this being her first meet of the indoor season the 5,000m is a possibility to go after in some future meet,” said Harris.
Brooke Kent, the reigning MIAA Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, improved on her provisional mark going 18-03.00 (5.56m) to finish second in the long jump.
Freshman Kenton Lonberger set two school records and provisionalled in the men’s sprints. The reigning MIAA Men’s Track Athlete of the Week was the top collegiate finisher with a school record time of 6.83 in the 60m dash. It breaks Jon Dickson’s mark of 6.90 set at the 2000 KSU All-Comers meet. He also ran a school record 21.97 in the 200m dash that is not a provisional mark due to the 300m length of the Iowa State track. He broke Joe Herron’s mark of 22.10 set at the 1998 Iowa State Qualifier.
“It was very exciting for our entire team to see freshman Kenton Lonberger race the top sprinters at Iowa State,” said Harris. “To come away with two school records in one meet - I don't know if I have every seen that before in my years at ESU - and I believe he wants to be challenged to see if he can go faster.”
Craig Saalfeld tied the fourth best in school history with a provisional qualifying mark of 6-10.25 in the high jump.
Emporia State will be in action at the Pitt State Invitational on February 1 in Pittsburg, Kan.
