ESU HITS SEVEN PROVISIONALS AND AN AUTOMATIC OVER WEEKEND

February 16, 2008—All-American Jonel Rossbach shattered the school record and recorded the fastest time in the nation this year in the 5000m at the ISU Classic in Ames, Iowa on Friday. Her automatic qualifier was joined by seven provisional qualifiers by ESU at the MSSU Radio Shack Invitational in Joplin, Mo.

Rossbach’s time of 16:51.62 is the top mark in Division II this year by nearly 16 seconds and broke Kadri Kelve’s ESU record of 17:11.80 set in 2003 by over 20 seconds. She finished seventh in the field that was won by Iowa State All-American Lisa Koll. Koll’s time of 15:52.37 is an NCAA Division I automatic qualifier and shattered the meet and facility record by 23 seconds in a race that saw five competitors hit the D-I provisional qualifying mark.

“This may have been the best regular season race Jonel has ever run in,” said ESU head coach Dave Harris. “This was very similar to the national championships in cross country. She ran with the top three for a good portion of the race before Koll just ran away from everyone.”

Brooke Kent and Jennifer Robinson had a busy weekend in Joplin. Robinson provisionally qualified in the long jump at 18-01.75 (5.53m) to finish fourth behind. She also hit a provisional mark in the high jump with a mark of 5-05.75 (1.67m) to place fifth. She finished her day by placing fifth in the triple jump.

Kent finished third at in the long jump with the fifth best jump in ESU history. Her jump of 18-11.75 (5.78m) is a provisional qualifier and just two centimeters away from the automatic mark. She placed fifth in 60m dash and 12 th in the 60m hurdles.

Two freshmen picked up championships and provisional marks for the ESU men at the Radio Shack Invitational. Kenton Lonberger continued his outstanding season with a time of 22.32 to win the 200m. He also hit a provisional mark of 6.85 to place second in the 60m dash.

Josh Honeycutt won the long jump with a jump of 23-00.50 (7.02m) and just missed the provisional mark. His triple jump of 47-02.50 (14.39m) did earn a provisional mark and placed him third in the event. Doug Marshall also provisionalled in the triple jump with a leap of 47-01.50 (14.36m) to place fourth behind Honeycutt.

Damon Birk was the other provisional qualifier for the Hornets in Joplin. His 52-10.75 (16.12m) placed him fourth in the shot put.

On Friday Skyler Delmott ran the fifth fastest 5000m in ESU history in Ames in the unseeded 5000m. He ran a 14:56.46 to place ninth.

“I am very pleased with the number of NCAA Qualifiers we are picking up,” said Harris. “As we start to peak over the next two weeks we have a chance for several more to represent us in Minnesota at the national meet.”

ESU will compete at the Prairie Wolf Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. on Feb. 22 and the KSU Open on Feb. 23 before competing at the MIAA Championships Feb. 29 and March 1 in Joplin, Mo.
