April 4, 2008-Emporia State was swept by Southwest Baptist in MIAA tennis action on Friday afternoon at the EHS Courts. The ESU women fell 5-4 while the Hornet men lost 9-0.
Seniors Marcella Bayon and Natalie Villaflor combined to account for three of ESU's match wins against SBU. Villaflor won her tenth straight match 6-1, 6-1 over SBU's Chelsey Janzen at #2 singles. Bayon bounced back from just her fourth loss of the year to defeat Jolee Cook 6-2, 6-2 at #1 singles. The two won 8-4 over Cook and Janzen for their tenth straight win at #1 doubles. Audrey Sherman picked up the other win for ESU, with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Jenna Hendrickson at #5 singles.
The Hornet men were very close in three matches against the #22 Bearcats. Nathan Mai and Kevin Schoon fell to Alex Kacamakis and Marton Zsiga 9-7 in #2 doubles. Julian Rios took #36 Kacamakis to a ten point tie breaker before falling 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5) at #1 singles. Grant Price went three sets with Micha Aubuchen 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at #6 singles.
The ESU women are back in action on Saturday against Neb.-Omaha. First serve from the Milton Courts on the ESU campus is set for 2 p.m. The Hornet men will take on Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday, April 8 at 4 p.m. on the Milton Courts.
