April 19, 2008-Both the Emporia State men’s and women’s tennis teams were defeated by Northwest Missouri by 7-2 scores on Saturday at the EHS Courts.
The women’s match was much closer than the 7-2 score. Natalie Villaflor and Marcela Bayon started things with an 8-0 win at #1 doubles. Molly Bowman and Kirsten Ford fell 8-6 at #2 doubles while Audrey Sherman and Amanda Morris lost 9-7 at #3 doubles to put ESU in a 2-1 hole coming out of doubles.
Villaflor won her match 6-2, 6-2 at #2 singles. Amanda Morris and Molly Bowman each won their opening sets before falling three sets.
Julian Rios had a hand in both wins for the Hornet men, winning 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 at #1 singles and teaming with Kent Grossling to win 8-4 at #1 doubles.
Both ESU teams will play exhibition matches against Cowley College on Wednesday. The men will play at the Milton Courts on the ESU campus while the women will play at the Emporia Country Club. The Hornet women will take on Ft. Hays State on April 25 in Topeka prior to the MIAA tournament. The conference tourney starts on April 26 in Topeka.
