April 26, 2008-The Emporia State men's tennis team won their first match against an MIAA opponent in five years and the women tied for fifth after dropping a five and a half hour long match in the first round of the MIAA Tennis Tournament at the Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka.
The Hornet men defeated Truman 5-4 by winning four of the singles matches. Kevin Schoon clinched the Hornets first MIAA win since 2003 with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win at #4 singles. ESU' s last victory against an MIAA team was a 7-2 win against Missouri-Rolla on April 19, 2003 in the MIAA Tournament fifth place dual. ESU would later fall 5-0 to #24 Washburn to finish tied for third in the MIAA.
The Hornet women and Lady Blues match took over five and a half hours to complete. The doubles team of Marcella Bayon and Natalie Villaflor suffered their first loss in dual competition since the season opener in an 8-6 set back to Diana Goldsmith and Amber Raindl at #1 doubles. Audrey Sherman and Amanda Morris gave ESU their point in doubles with an 8-6 win at #3.
WU took wins at #1 and #6 singles with 6-2, 6-1 wins at both positions for a 4-1 lead. ESU came back with a 7-5, 6-2 win by Natalie Villaflor at #2 and a 6-3, 7-5 win at #5 by Audrey Sherman. A 6-2, 5-7, 6-0 win by Amanda Morris at #3 evened the dual at 4-4 before WU's Allie Gardner prevailed 6-7, 6-2, 7-5 at #4 singles to seal the win for the Lady Blues.
ESU won their consolation match with Missouri Western 5-1 with the only loss occuring when Villaflor retired with ESU leading 4-0 before Bayon closed the dual with a 6-3, 6-4 win at #1 singles.
Due to weather concerns, Sunday's consolation action was cancelled and only the championship matches will be played. ESU will find out their NCAA Tournament fate early in the week with both the men's and women's teams in position to receive at large bids.
