Hornet Softball Sweeps Incarnate Word

Game one
Game two

March 22, 2009-Miranda Campbell was four for six with four RBI and Hornet pitchers did not allow an earned run in an Emporia State double header sweep of Incarnate Word on Sunday at the Trusler Sports Complex.

The Hornets won the opener 7-1, behind three RBI from Campbell and Megan Dennis' seven strike outs in the circle.  ESU scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings before exploding for four runs in the sixth. Campbell had a two RBI single and came home on Abby Smith's first triple of the season to highlight the sixth inning for ESU.  Dennis went the distance, scattering six hits with seven strike outs and only one walk as she allowed one unearned run in the sixth inning. Campbell ended the first game two for three with three RBI and a run scored. Smith was two for four with two RBI and a run while Jennifer Dace and Linda Ketter each went two for two.

Campbell's first inning RBI single was all the offense Jennifer Heerey would need in a 2-0 win for the Hornets in the nightcap. Heerey tossed a two-hit shutout with five strikeouts.  After allowing the first two batters of the game to reach base on an error and an infield single, she retired the next 15 straight on the way to her first seven inning shutout of her career. Angela Mahan was three for four in the second game with a run scored while Campbell was two for three with an RBI.

ESU has now won six of their last seven games to improve to 17-8 on the season.

The Hornets will open up MIAA play on Friday against Truman.  First pitch of the double header is set for 1 p.m. at the Trusler Sports Complex.  ESU is the four-time defending MIAA regular season champions.
