April 7, 2009-Angela Mahan went five for seven with six runs scored, three RBI, two doubles and a home run as Emporia State swept Truman 9-3 and 12-2 on Tuesday afternoon at the Trusler Sports Complex.
Aubree Brattin got ESU started in the matinee by driving in two runs in the first inning with a two out double that scored Mahan and Miranda Campbell. Truman came back with an unearned run in the top of the second to make it 2-1. Campbell's base loaded walk gave ESU a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Dani Mayer's first homer of the season made it 3-2 in the fourth before the Hornets exploded for six runs in the bottom of the inning. The scoring started when Mahan beat a throw to the plate as Jennifer Dace reached on a fielder's choice. Brattin followed with a two RBI double to make it 6-2. Abby Smith then connected on her second home run of the season, driving in Brattin. Jenna Potter took the next pitch over the fence in left field to make it 9-2. The Bulldogs scored one run in the top of the seventh for the final margin.
Brattin was two for three with four RBI and a run scored in the first game. Mahan was two for three with two runs scored while Campbell was one for one with an RBI, two runs scored and three walks.
Megan Dennis went the distance in the circle for ESU. She scattered five hits and struck out six and did not allow a walk in winning her 11th game of the year.
Brattin gave the Hornets the lead in the nightcap, as Mahan scored on another fielder's choice. Campbell made it 2-0 when she scored on Dace's ground out. Mahan hit her second homer of the year in the second inning to put ESU up 4-0, made it 5-0 with an RBI single and scored the sixth run on Campbell's RBI single in the fourth. Manley's two run homer in the top of the sixth made it 6-2 headed to the bottom of the inning. Hughes had a two RBI single to make it 8-2 and scored on a fielder's choice by Abby Smith to make it 9-2. Potter followed Smith with a three run homer down the left field line to invoke the run rule.
Mahan was three for four with four runs, three RBI, a double and her second home run of the year in the second game. Potter was two for four with three RBI and her second homer of the day and fifth of the year.
Jennifer Heerey picked up her 13th win of the year, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out three. She and Dennis did not walk a Bulldog in either game.
The Hornets, now 24-9 on the year and 5-1 in the MIAA, are back in action on Friday when the travel to Missouri Southern. First pitch in Joplin, Mo. is set for 2 p.m.
