Hornet Softball Falls in AAUW Showcase

March 13, 2009-Friday the 13th was not kind to the Emporia State softball team as Southwestern Oklahoma scored seven runs in the second inning in an 8-4 Hornet loss at the AAUW Softball Showcase at the Trusler Sports Complex on Friday.
After Jennifer Heerey worked a scoreless first, the first four batters reached base to start the second inning before she was relieved by Megan Dennis. Dennis allowed three more runs before settling down to work four scoreless innings heading into the seventh. Brittany Strickland then hit a solo home run in the seventh for the final Bulldog run.
ESU got on the board when Abby Hughes led off the fourth inning with a single up the middle and Miranda Campbell hit her second home run of the season. Abby Smith then singled to right and pinch runner Haley Carpenter went to second on Jennifer Dace's single through the right side. Carpenter went to third on Aubree Brattin's fly out and scored on Linda Ketter's sacrifice fly to pull the Hornets within 7-4. Brattin led off the seventh with her first homer of the season and had runners at second and third with one out before two fly outs ended the game.
Dennis worked 6.0 innings in relief, surrendering four runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking one.
The Hornets will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Augustana at 1:30 p.m. followed by an non-conference game against Southwest Baptist at 6:30 p.m.
