ESU SWEEPS SOUTHWEST BAPTIST AT TRUSLER

Game one
Game two

April 18, 2009-After handing Central Missouri their first conference loss on Friday, the Emporia State softball team kept up the winning ways with a double header sweep of Southwest Baptist on Saturday at the Trusler Sports Complex.  ESU won the matinee 6-2 and took a 12-4 run rule win in the night cap.

The Hornets took advantage of two Bearcat errors in the first inning of game one to jump out to a 3-0 lead.  Angela Mahan and Abby Hughes both reached base on errors to open ESU's half of the frame and each came around to score without a base hit.  Aubree Brattin made it 3-0 with her third home run of the season.  After SBU made it 3-1 in the second ESU put up two runs in the fourth and a single run in the fifth.  The Bearcats closed to 6-2 and had runners on second and third in the seventh before Megan Dennis retired the final two batters for her 14th win of the year.

Jennifer Dace was one for two with two RBI and Abby Smith had a double and two runs scored in the first game.

SBU took the early lead in game two, scoring three unearned runs in the top of the first.  The Hornets answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and took the lead on Mahan's two RBI single in the bottom of the second.  ESU ended up putting three more runs on the board in the second and added an unearned run in the third for a 6-3 lead.  SBU made it 6-4 in the fifth when ESU exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Jenna Potter had the big hit with a two RBI single with the bases loaded.  The run rule came into effect in the sixth after Mahan reached on a passed ball on strike three, stole second, went to third on Hughes single and cme home a sac bunt by Miranda Campbell for the 12-4 lead.

Mahan scored three runs and had three RBI from her lead off spot.  Hughes, Campbell, Dace and Potter all had two RBI in the night cap with Hughes going three for four. Jennifer Heerey picked up her 17th win, allowing on one earned run.

The Hornets, who have won six of their last seven, will take on Missouri Western on Tuesday at the Trusler Sports Complex.  It will be Diamond Day at the Diamonds for ESU with $1 admission, $1 hotdogs and $1 pizza slices.  First pitch is set for 4 p.m. on Turnbull Field.
