April 11-2009-For the second day in a row the Emporia State softball team split an MIAA road double header. The Hornets fell to Pittsburg State in the first game 6-5 and won the second game 1-0 in Pittsburg, Kan.
After taking a 1-0 led in the first inning on Abby Hughes home run, the Hornets gave up four runs in the bottom of the frame highlighted by Haley Deaton's three run home run for the Gorillas. ESU cut the lead to 4-2 on Jill Peters homer in the second, only to see PSU come back with a run of their own. ESU scored two unearned runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Angela Mahan and a single by Hughes to make it 6-4. Miranda Campbell drove in Mahan in the seventh to make it a 6-5 game but the Hornets couldn't get any closer.
Mahan was three for four with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored for ESU. Jennifer Heerey started and took the loss for ESU, giving up five runs in 1.1 innings pitched. Megan Dennis came on in relief and only allowed one run in 4.2 innings.
Dennis then started and threw a three hit shutout in the night cap. She struck out six and walked three in picking up her third shutout of the season. ESU would score the only run of the game in the sixth when Mahan singled to open the inning and went to second on Hughes sacrfice bunt. After Campbell flew out to centerfield, Jennifer Dace reaced on an error by Gorilla first baseman Jessica Jones that allowed Mahan to score.
