ESU'S DENNIS THROWS PERFECT GAME IN SWEEP OF NEWMAN

Game one
Game two

April 14, 2009-Emporia State’s Megan Dennis threw a perfect game and Miranda Campbell was five for five with six RBI in a double header sweep of Newman on Tuesday at the Trusler Sports Complex. ESU won the first game 9-0 in five innings and took the nigh cap 9-2.

Dennis struck out two and only allowed two balls out of the infield as she tossed the first perfect game for the Hornets since Melissa Stevens threw one against Henderson State on Feb. 20, 2004. The senior from Liberty, Mo. only got the count to three balls on three batters as she threw just 58 pitches on the day. Jenna Potter preserved the perfect game making a diving catch on Stephanie Harshberger’s fly ball to centerfield for the final out of the game.

Offensively the Hornets were led by Miranda Campbell who went two for two with five RBI, a home run and two runs scored. Jill Peters hit a two run homer for the Hornets as well.

In the second game, Abby Hughes was two for three with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored to pace the offense. Campbell was three for three with a double, triple, two runs scored and an RBI in the night cap. Jennifer Heerey had a no hitter through four innings before giving up two runs on four hits in the fifth inning. She settled down to retire the final seven batters she faced.

With the wins, the Hornets improved to 28-11 overall and 10-1 at the Trusler Sports Complex. ESU will play host to league leading Central Missouri on Friday afternoon at Trusler. First pitch of the double header is set for 2 p.m. at Turnbull Field.
