HORNETS END REGULAR SEASON WITH SWEEP OF FHSU

April 24, 2009-In the final home double header of the season, the Emporia State softball team scored 13 runs and pounded out 23 hits in a sweep of Ft. Hays State. ESU won the first game 6-0 and took the second 7-1 at the Trusler Sports Complex.

In the matinee Jennifer Dace moved within one double of the ESU career record for doubles, while Megan Dennis tossed her sixth shutout of the year in the 6-0 victory. Miranda Campbell singled in Abby Hughes in the bottom of the first for all the run support Dennis would need. ESU had runners in scoring position every inning but did not put another run on the board until the fifth inning. Dace singled with two outs and came home on Aubree Brattin's double to make it 2-0. Brattin then scored from second when Jenna Potter reached on an error. The Hornets added three more in the sixth on Campbell's RBI single and Dace's two RBI double.

Campbell was two for three with two RBI while Dace was two for four with two RBI and her 51st career double. Dennis threw a two hit shutout with a season high nine strikeouts.

Abby Hughes gave ESU a 1-0 lead in the first when she scored on Kayla Rupa's throwing error. Campbell hit her eighth homer of the season and Dace scored on Potter's ground out to make it 3-0 after three. Jill Peters homered deep to left to lead off the fourth. After Cortney Brown homered for the Tigers in the fifth, ESU came back with three straight singles by Mahan, Campbell and Dace to score three runs in the sixth for the final 7-1 score.

Campbell was two for three with a home run, walk, two runs and two RBI to pace the offense in game two. Peters was three for three with a homer and one RBI. Jennifer Heerey went the distance, allowing one run on three hits for her 19th win of the season.

The next action for ESU will be the first round of the MIAA Tournament on Thursday, April 30 in Overland Park, Kan. The Hornets are the five time defending MIAA Tournament Champions. First pitch at the Blue Valley Recreation Complex is set for 6 p.m. ESU's opponent may not be determined until Monday.

NOTE:
ESU's double header at Newman on Tuesday has been canceled and will not be made up.
