March 15, 2009-Megan Dennis picked up a win and a save and her battery mate Aubree Brattin went five for seven with four RBI as Emporia State swept two games on the final day of the AAUW Softball Showcase at the Trusler Sports Complex. ESU defeated Southwestern Oklahoma State 3-1 and Tarleton State 10-6 on Sunday.
In the first game, the Hornets fell behind 1-0 after the first half inning before Brattin doubled in the tying run in the bottom of the fourth. ESU took the lead in the fifth on an RBI double by Abby Hughes and added an insurance run on Abby Smith’s RBI single.
Jennifer Heerey scattered seven hits over 5.0 innings to earn her eighth win of the season. Megan Dennis came in to hold the Bulldogs hitless over the final 2.0 for her second save of the year.
In the nightcap, Tarleton State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Hornets responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The first run came as Angela Mahan stole home on the back end of a double steal. Brattin made it 5-2 on an infield single to the hole at shortstop and later scored an unearned run when Jenna Potter reached on an error. TSU added a run in the fourth to make it 6-3 and ESU retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth on Jill Peters’ grand slam home run. Brattin made it 9-6 with a two out single that plated two. The Hornets added an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth for the final score.
Dennis went the distance with nine strikeouts and only two walks. After giving up six hits in the first inning, she only allowed two hits over the final 6.0 innings.
The Hornets went 4-1 on the weekend, winning their final four games. The next action for ESU is next Sunday, March 22 against Incarnate Word. The first pitch of the double header is set for 11 a.m. on Turnbull Field at the Trusler Sports Complex.
