April 22, 2009-Emporia State pitchers combined to hold Washburn batters to just six hits and one run in a double header sweep in Topeka, Kan. on Wednesday afternoon. The Hornets won the first game 4-1 and took the second game 8-0.
After ESU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the matinee on Jennifer Dace's RBI ground out, Megan Dennis struck out the side in the bottom of the first to set the tone for the day. Dennis would go on to strike out five of the first six batters she faced and retired the first 14 before giving up a two out walk in the fifth inning. She would take a no hitter into the seventh before giving up a run on three hits.
ESU added two insurance runs in the fourth. Abby Smith had an RBI single and later scored on an error by the second baseman on a failed pick off attempt. Jill Peters scored ESU's final run with her fifth home run of the year to lead off the seventh.
Dennis went the distance in the circle with seven strike outs, allowing three hits and one walk.
Four of the first five Hornets scored to open the nightcap on the way to an 8-0 win. Dace had a two RBI double with one out and then scored on Aubree Brattin's fourth home run of the year. ESU made it 5-0 in the top of the second when Linda Ketter scored on Angela Mahan's sacrifice fly. The Hornets put three more on the board in the seventh when Miranda Campbell singled in Mahan and Brattin hit a two RBI double.
Jennifer Heerey tossed her fifth shutout of the year, scattering three hits and walking two while striking out five. She struck out two of the first three batters to open the game.
Brattin was two for four with four RBI in the second game. Mahan's double in the seventh tied her for fifth on the ESU single season list with 17 on the year.
The Hornets will host Ft. Hays State on Friday in the final regular season games of the season. The Preston Family Scoreboard on Turnbull Field will be dedicated prior to the first game with Aloha Preston throwing out the first pitch. Seniors Megan Dennis, Jill Peters, Aubree Brattin, Jennifer Dace as well as Shelbe Hughes will be recognized prior to the second game. First pitch of the double header is set for 2 p.m.
