#25 HORNETS WIN TWO AT PSU-MSSU CROSSOVER

#25 ESU 8, Arkansas Tech 1
#25 ESU 9, Lincoln 1 (5)

February 27, 2009-The #25 Emporia State softball team swept two games on the first day of the PSU-MSSU Crossover Invitational in Joplin, Mo. on Friday. The Hornets defeated Arkansas Tech 8-1 and Lincoln 9-1.

The #25 Emporia State softball team used a four run fourth inning to secure an 8-1 win over Arkansas Tech in their first game at the MSSU/PSU Crossover Invite in Joplin, Mo.  Abby Smith had the big bat for the Hornets in game one, going two for four with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored.

The Hornets jumped in front when shortstop Abby Hughes led off the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.  With one out Jen Dace doubled to right and scored on Miranda Campbell's RBI single through the right side for a 2-0 lead.

That was all the support ESU pitchers would need as Jennifer Heerey and Megan Dennis combined on a five hitter.  Heerey started and got the win going 4.0 innings, giving up one unearned run on three singles.  Dennis shutout ATU over the final 3.0 innings, allowing on two singles while striking out two.

Jennifer Dace and Miranda Campbell hit back to back home runs and Jenna Potter followed with one of her own one batter later to highlight a seven run first inning as ESU run-ruled Lincoln 9-1 in their second game on Friday in Joplin, Mo.

Dace ended the game two for three with three RBI and a run scored.  Abby Hughes was two for three with two RBI and Aubree Brattin was three for three with two runs and an RBI for ESU. Every batter for ESU reached base and six players had RBI in the game.

Dennis picked up the win allowing one run on three hits and striking out seven in 3.0 innings of work while Heerey came on to pitch 2.0 innings of shutout relief.  The Hornet duo combined to strikeout 12 while walking none in 5.0 innings of work.

The Hornets, now 10-6 on the year, are scheduled to resume play in the Crossover on Sunday against MIAA foes Truman at 1 p.m. in Joplin and Ft. Hays State at 5 p.m. in Pittsburg, Kan.
