May 8, 2008-Emporia State scored four runs in the second inning and held on for a 5-3 win over Washburn in the first round of the NCAA North Central Regional Softball Tournament in Emporia, Kan.
Shelbe Hughes was two for two with two runs scored and an RBI for the Hornets while Mandy Tarbutton led the offensive attack for the Lady Blues with two hits, a run scored and an RBI.
Samantha Sheeley picked up her 25th win of the year, scattering eight hits ove seven innings with four strikeouts. Kelly Swygert gave up five runs, only one earned, while giving up six hits for WU.
ESU will play Neb.-Omaha at 3 p.m. on Friday while WU will take on Minnesota State at 10 a.m. in an elimination game.
