April 27, 2008-The #21 Hornets swept Washburn 4-2 and 11-3 on Senior Day at the Trusler Sports Complex to clinch their fourth consecutive MIAA regular season championship and the top seed in this week's post season tournament.
Miranda Campbell gave ESU a 1-0 lead when she tripled in Jennifer Dace in the bottom of the first inning of game one. Campbell then scored on April Huddleston's single to center. The Hornets got two unearned runs in the second when Dace singled in Jessie Wiard, who had reached on an error. Campbell then knocked a single up the middle to score Angela Mahan for the Hornets fourth run of the game. ESU would end up stranding 13 runners in the game, but Samantha Sheeley would hold WU to just two runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Sheeley did not allow a hit after the Lady Blues two run third inning.
WU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning of the night cap before ESU responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Aubree Brattin tied the score with an RBI single and scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch. Mahan made it 4-1 with a two RBI single before Dace capped the inning with a two run homer to left center. WU pulled within 6-3 with two runs in the top of the fourth. The inning ended when Malarie Fellers hit a sac fly to right and Candi Madill was called out on appeal for leaving second base early. Campbell connected on a two RBI double in the bottom of the fourth and Huddleston and Shelbe Hughes each followed with RBI singles to give ESU a 10-3 lead. Campbell then envoked the run rule with a solo home run to left field with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Megan Dennis picked up the win for ESU in the circle.
The Hornets are scheduled to play at Newman in Wichita on Tuesday and begin play in the MIAA Tournament on Thursday. ESU will take on the eighth seed at 12 noon at the Mid-America West Sports Complex in Shawnee, Kan.
NOTES:
Miranda Campbell hit for the cycle in the double header with a triple and single in game one and a double and home run in game two.
April Huddleston has now reached base safely in eight straight plate appearances.
The Hornets have now won an unprecedented four straight outright MIAA regular season championships.
