March 26, 2008-Jessie Wiard was four for seven with six runs scored and six stolen bases as the #24 Emporia State softball team swept Newman 5-0 and 8-0 on Wednesday at the Trusler Sports Complex.
In game one, Samantha Sheeley went the distance in the circle for ESU with a season high 14 strikeouts. She struckout the last five batters of the game and allowed just two hits. Wiard was two for four in game one with two runs scored while Jennifer Dace went two for three with two RBI.
Wiard reached base in all four plate appearances in the nightcap and scored each time she reached base. She twice stole second and third base and scored the game ending run by beating a throw home on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the sixth. Miranda Campbell hit her team leading tenth home run of the year in the fifth inning. Megan Dennis went the distance in the circle, striking out five Jets and scattering five hits.
The Hornets are back in action on Saturday when they take on Minnesota-Moorhead at 10 a.m. at the Trusler Sports Complex.
