March 29, 2008-Emporia State exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth in a 12-4, come from behind, run rule victory over Minnesota State-Moorhead on Saturday morning.
The Dragons got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first. Jennifer Dace tied the score for ESU with a two-run homer to right center in the bottom of the inning. MSU-M retook the lead with two runs on four walks and a single in the top of the third inning to chase ESU starter Samantha Sheeley.
The Hornets pulled within 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth on a double by Shelbe Hughes and a single by Aubree Brattin. ESU took the lead for good with eight runs, seven of them unearned, in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jessie Wiard got things started with a single through the left side and then stole second. She tied the score on a single by Angela Mahan. Mahan would end up on third base, taking second on the throw home and going to third on an error by the shortstop. Dace gave ESU the lead on a single up the middle that plated Mahan. The Hornets would go on to score a total of eight runs on six hits with four Dragon errors in the inning. ESU would envoke the run rule with a single run in the bottom of the sixth.
Mahan and Dace both had three RBI on the day for the Hornets. Megan Dennis picked up the win with 3.1 innings of relief.
The Hornets will open MIAA play with four straight home doubleheaders beginning April 2 against Missouri Western. First pitch from the Trusler Sports Complex is set for 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
