#22 HORNETS COME FROM BEHIND TWICE TO SWEEP TRUMAN

April 20, 2008-For the second straight day, the #22 Hornets came from behind on the road in the seventh to force extra innings on the way to a doubleheader sweep. A 2-1 Emporia State win over Truman in eight innings in game one was followed by a 3-1 victory in game two.

In the matinee ESU’s Samantha Sheeley and TSU’s Katie Noski were locked in a scoreless tie through the first five and half innings. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs got back to back base hits to take a 1-0 lead. The run broke a string of 25.0 scoreless innings by Sheeley. Jill Peters led off the top of the seventh with a pinch hit single. Aubree Brattin re-entered the game at first and went to second on Linda Ketter’s pinch hit sacrifice bunt. She went to third on Jessie Wiard’s ground out to second and scored the game tying run on Angela Mahan’s single to center. Sheeley then retired the Bulldogs in order in the bottom of the inning. Miranda Campbell, the MIAA’s leading home run hitter entering this week’s action, put ESU on top with a lead-off homer to right center. Sheeley then struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth to pick up her third win in three games this weekend.

Truman took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the nightcap. Wiard would tie the score for the Hornets in the top of the third after walking, stealing second and scoring on Mahan’s single with two outs. The steal of second was Wiard’s school record 38 th of the year. ESU took the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth. April Huddleston hit a one out double and went to third on a wild pitch. Shelbe Hughes then walked and stole second before Ketter, running for Huddleston, was thrown out at the plate on Peters’ ground ball to second. Brattin gave ESU the lead with an RBI single to left and Jenna Potter provided an insurance run with a single to center. After allowing a run on four hits in the first two innings, Megan Dennis did not allow a hit the rest of the way as she won her ninth consecutive decision.

The Hornets will continue their road trip when they head to Ft. Hays State on Tuesday. First pitch of the double header from Hays, Kan. is set for 4 p.m.

NOTES:

Entering the weekend, the Hornets were 0-11 when trailing after six innings and were just 1-3 in extra innings.

Jessie Wiard has now stolen 38 straight bases.

Miranda Campbell is hitting .500 (17 of 34) in MIAA play.

Samantha Sheeley is 7-1 with a 0.73 ERA in MIAA play.
