March 9, 2008--The Hornet softball team picked up a pair of wins in the MWSU Crossover Tournament that was moved to the Mustang Academy indoor facility in Wichita on Sunday. Emporia State defeated South Dakota 8-3 and Augustana 3-0 to even their record at 8-8.
Jessie Wiard led the way offensively for ESU against USD, going two for four with three RBI and reaching base four times. Her two RBI double in the second tied the score and her RBI single in the fourth gave ESU the lead. Brittany Morris picked up the win while Megan Grisell struck out four in the final two innings to wrap-up for the Hornets.
Samantha Sheeley went the distance against Augustana in a two hit shutout. She took a perfect game into the fifth and ended with 15 strikeouts on the day. The Hornets strung together four straight singles to score two runs in the second for all the offensive support Sheeley would need.
The MWSU Crossover is scheduled to move to Emporia on Monday at Old Hornet Softball Field, located north of I-35 on the ESU campus. MWSU will open play at 10 a.m. against USD and AC and ESU will take on USD at 2 p.m. and wrap-up the tourney at 4 p.m. against AC.
